The Riesling ambassador Weingut Markus Molitor, made headlines when three of its Auslese Rieslings got 100 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate in 2015 earning Markus the nickname “Herr 300 Punkte” (Mr 300 Points). Markus inherited his father’s winery in 1984 at the tender age of 20. Around 75% of the 120ha of vineyards (15 plots) are situated in the Grand Cru sites of the middle Mosel (near Moselle river), while the rest are located on the fertile banks of the Saar river, all steep slopes planted with old vines up to 100 years old.
Ürziger Würzgarten comes from south to south-east facing slopes with a unique red weathered slate soil. This wine impresses with an elegant interplay of expressive minerality and notes of ripe fruits. Natural fermentation and a long time spent on the lees contribute to the complexitiy of the wine. Off-dry towards sweet on the scale.
95 POINTS - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2022 - "The 2020 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Golden Capsule) is fascinatingly pure, refined and flinty on the deep, complex and concentrated nose that shows crushed flint stone and lemon aromas. Enormously saline and highly refined on the palate, this is a stellar Kabinett with very fine phenolics and crystalline grip from the unique Würzgarten terroir. What an amazing, seamless and perfectly balanced Kabinett that, according to its must weight, could obviously have been a highly digestible Auslese from a grand cru terroir as well. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022."
