Greywacke is the exciting solo venture of Kevin Judd, who was formerly the chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 vintages, and was instrumental in the international recognition which New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc enjoys today. The name 'Greywacke' was adopted by Kevin for his first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils there.
A lush concoction of baked figs, poached pears and crystallised ginger drizzled with manuka honey and a light sprinkling of soft brown sugar. Greywacke Pinot Gris is a ripe, opulent expression of the variety made in a voluptuous off-dry style that has considerable concentration and a long, luscious finish.
'A wine to ponder over...it is a powerful, fleshy wine, with lush stonefruit flavours, an unobtrusive splash of sweetness and finely balanced acidity. Already delicious, with notable complexity and richness.’ 5 Stars, Michael Cooper, MICHAELCOOPERWINES.COM
‘Bright, fresh and appealing pinot gris that is a delicious mix of sun-ripened tree fruit flavours and nutty yeast lees characters. A hint of sweetness is balanced by refreshing acidity.’ 94 Points, Bob Campbell MW, THEREALREVIEW.COM
‘Light straw gold colour. Cumquat, curry powder and Manuka honey on the nose. A rich style, off-dry and built around an oily textural core. Honey and stone fruits with a melange of curry spices filling the palate and it glides long and deep. Will appeal to those who are looking for a richer, sweeter style.’ 93 Points, Stuart Knox, THEREALREVIEW.COM
Meaty fish can however also stand up to more robust flavours, found in Asian cuisine such as chilli, ginger, miso, lemongrass and soy. These dishes would demand a rounder wine with more character such as ripe and fruity Chenin Blanc / Vouvray or a Mosel Riesling to stand up to the substantial flavours in the dish. A spicy fish curry would be perfectly enhanced by this Pinot Gris from Greywacke.
