Vina Izadi is based in Villabuena in Rioja Alavesa, the highest part of Rioja. It was founded in 1987 by Gonzalo Anton in an effort to ‘satisfy the needs of our friends over a meal’ as they put it. This has clearly gone from strength to strength as the wines they now produce are really modern wines in an international style, but which remain true to their Riojan roots. All of Izadi's vineyards have traditionally-trained bush vines, a method which they believe gives better exposure of the grapes which, in turn, leads to more complete ripeness and softer, fuller wines. The vineyards lie 600m above sea level so warm days give way to cool nights, encouraging the aromatic qualities in the grapes to develop fully.
TASTING: The wine is a deep ruby in colour, with very intense aromas of red fruit and a touch of cedar. The vanilla oak perfumes integrate well with the juicy black fruit on the palate and fine, savoury tannins. The wine has tons of fruit, a definite floral note and a rounded structure. Red fruit characters linger on the long, long finish.
