In 1972, Ridge made its first Lytton Springs from vines planted on the eastern half of the vineyard at the turn of the century. Both the eastern and western portions of the vineyard were purchased in the early 1990s. The vineyard is planted to Zinfandel and its principal complementary varieties. At 460mm, rainfall during the year was below average, although with much of it falling in March and April, there was enough to sustain the vines during summer. Nonetheless, under half the normal volume was produced. Fire broke out to the northwest in mid-August, but winds blew the smoke due south, bypassing Ridge’s vineyards. The grapes were hand-harvested at night between 21 August and 17 September. The grapes were crushed and fermentation proceeded with natural yeast. The wine was aged for 13 months in air-dried American oak barrels, with 15% new wood.
Winemakers Notes
Late spring rains during flowering reduced fruit set across all varieties, especially Petite Sirah. Thirty-eight blocks were picked at ideal ripeness over four weeks from August to September. Of these, twenty-six were selected for their rich black fruit and perfectly balanced structure. This classic Lytton Springs will be enjoyable over the next ten years.
Tasting Notes
While typically powerful and profound, the 2020 Lytton Springs also has an extra degree of aromatic brightness and lift. The palate shows terrific breadth of plum and blueberry fruit, as well as energy and length.
79% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah, 10% Carignane.
