The Querciabella Camartina 2016, one of the original Super Tuscans from arguably the best vintage for the region in decades. With 95+ from Antonio Galloni, this is potentially the best release ever for this wine.

Camartina is a Cabernet/Sangiovese blend from some of the highest vineyards in Chianti, and produced in a more elegant, terroir-focused style than other Super Tuscans: the Burgundy to Bolgheri’s Bordeaux. First released in 1982, the year before Ornellaia, it has managed to keep a relatively low profile over the years, which means it offers absolutely astonishing value. This is partially due to the tiny production: it is only made in the best years, and only around 1,500 cases are bottled – for context, this is less than 10% of the production of Ornellaia and 3% of Tignanello. Given that it is only being released now, after two more years’ bottle age than most 2016 Super Tuscans, the pricetag is even more extraordinary.

Even at this prestige level, sustainability remains at the heart of Querciabella’s wines : they have been working with organic methods since 1988 and were certified in 2000, using biodynamic practices since 2000, and have been 100% vegan since 2010. Today, they practice a unique form of plant-based biodynamics that is tailored specifically to their location and style. Not only is the wine great, but you do good by drinking it.

"The 2016 Camartina is superb. As always, Camartina is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese, all from Greve's Ruffoli district, where Querciabella is located. At this stage in its development, the Camartina is driven by Sangiovese in its red-toned fruit, aromatics and acid profile. The 2016 is vibrant, saline and full of energy. I am so intrigued to see how it develops in bottle."
