d'Arenberg are a wild Aussie spirit in the heart of McLaren Vale. Chester Osborn's a showman, no doubt, and that shines through in their bewildering range of wines. Much more than just Shiraz - they've got everything, with quirky names and flashier labels. Yet, beneath that razzle-dazzle, there's a serious focus on organic and biodynamic vineyards. Whether you love them or find them a bit much they always get people talking.
Plenty of McLaren Vale Shiraz packs a punch, but this one takes things to another level. It's that iconic Aussie boldness dialled up a notch - yet there's a surprising elegance here too. The nose is downright decadent: plums, pepper, a whiff of something meaty and earthy, all wrapped in dark chocolate. Big and silky in the mouth, but still with a bit of youthful grip to it. And the fruit - so intense, so savoury and absolutely delicious with a finesse that lingers, setting it above the rest.
Full-bodied and peppery this is a perfect partner for big roasts. It's got plenty of structure and will mellow beautifully through to the end of the decade.
