Clonakilla means 'meadow of the church' and is the name of the founder's grandfather's farm in County Clare, Ireland. Dr John Kirk founded Clonakilla vineyard at Murrumbateman, 40 kilometres north of Canberra, in 1971 after his scientific knowledge led him to question why vines were not being grown in this area. His research showed that the soil and climate seemed suited to certain varieties. This Shiraz is made from grapes selected from five vineyards in the Hilltops district around Young on the South Western Slopes of New South Wales.
TASTING: "Rich dark fruit through the aroma, concentrated flavours and waves of ripe tannin rolling in from the deep. Great now if you love wine of power and intensity. Destined for a long life in the cellar for those who are patient."
The Boxing Day staple, Honey Roasted Gammon, is ideally served with a lush, sweet fruited Shiraz. We would recommend trying this beauty from Australia. The salty, sweet meat balances out the fruitiness of the red and the seductive complexity of the wine cuts thought the fat so well.
