Château Pape Clément is a Cru Classé Graves property that has one of the oldest documented histories of any Bordeaux vineyard, having been planted in 1300 by Bernard de Groth, the future Pope Clément V. In 1939 the estate was bought by the Montagne family and is now owned and run by Léo Montagne.
JAMES SUCKLING ***** 97-98 Points
8 Apr, 2021 – Superb aromas of blackberries, crushed stones, iodine and graphite. Full-bodied with ultra fine tannins and a balanced finish. Such length and beauty. Very close to the 2019 in quality.

Tasted by Jane Anson (at Primeur week tastings in Bordeaux, 01 May 2021), Part of Best Pessac-Léognan 2020 wines tasted en primeur - Powerful in colour, this has the glass staining red and purple colours that Pape Clément does so well. Touches of liquorice and cocoa beans, well handled, this gives power with one hand but takes it away with the other as the austerity and fresh mint leaf comes to the fore. Impressive, a really enjoyable, classically wrought but still full of concentration Pape Clément. Savoury, there is nothing too exuberant in the fruits but it exudes deft confidence. - Drinking Window 2028 - 2044

Drink: 2026 - 2040 - Cask sample. Perhaps a little more closed than their Clémentin. Great integrity to the fruit though, and there is a sense of decorum and breeding to the fruit, as well as stunning length. Super-fine tannins, refreshing acidity, everything in proportion. (RH)
