Description

The Togouchi Premium is the new Chugoku Jozo blended whisky. Made from scotch malt whisky and canadian grain whisky, but matured and vatted in Japan by japanese blenders, the very first identified flavors are very sweet with a dominant of coconut and hints of caramel and exotic fruits.
Composed of whiskies aged 8 years in oak barrels in a tunnel dug in the heart of the mountainous region of Nishi Chugoku Sanchi, the Togouchi Premium offers a thin and light texture, ideal to start discovering Japanese whisky.
Blend with an excellent price / quality ratio, it will surprise the most curious Japanese whisky enthusiasts with its unique history and will seduce them with the blending know-how of the house Chugoku Jozo.

Oliver's Review!

It’s whisky time! Today’s review covers one of Sakurao Distilleries better known whiskies, Togouchi Premium Blended Japanese Whisky. Having tasted a number of American and Scottish whiskies recently and rather enjoyed them (others not so much), this Japanese aged Scottish malt/Canadian grain blend is a welcome introduction into the wide world of Japanese whisky. Togouchi Premium Blend is distilled with a blend of Scottish malt and Canadian grain; however, there should be no falsehood when categorising this whisky as Japanese. The ageing process very-much occurs in Japan, even better, in the town of Togouchi; and better yet, in an abandoned railway tunnel used to maintain a cool temperature year-round, as to let the whisky mature slowly over time.

My tasting notes:

👃- This whisky has a slight rum-like smell, a smell born from the presence of milk chocolatey 🍫 notes as well as nutmeg, sultana and a light spice 🌶
👅- A bevvy of milk chocolate 🍫 melts on the tongue along with a tinge of vanilla, smoked oak 🪵 , saffron and finishing with a light, pleasant spice 🌶
🏁-The finish is much lighter than expected, with buttery vanilla dissipating around a distinct note of cereal 🥣

Rating: 7/10

As introductions to Japanese whiskies go, this wasn’t a bad start. This whisky provides a very good value to cost ratio, with it only costing £49.95. Your typical Scottish or American whisky can easily go for upwards of £70 for the same level of quality and taste. This is a whisky I would recommend to anyone wishing to start their whisky journey, or are looking to delve into the Japanese whisky market.
