We never imagined that a dog would transform our lives in such incredible ways.

Growing up, dogs were always a part of our family — my mum even showcased them at Crufts! But when Neil and I met almost 30 years ago and got engaged after just three months, I came to a bittersweet realisation: having a pet of our own seemed impossible because Neil has severe allergies to fur and feathers. It wasn’t just a convenient excuse to dodge visiting the in-laws! Over the years, we had a few close calls that led to trips to A&E due to fleeting interactions with animals, so we made do with a fish tank for companionship.
Then came January 2020, a pivotal moment when Neil was hospitalised in Tenerife due to severe pain and difficulty breathing. Thankfully, he was stabilised enough to return home, but this was just the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. For those who know Neil, you understand the challenges he has faced, so I'll keep this part brief. We discovered that Neil has a rare blood condition that surfaced later in life.
One of his monthly medications has been reported to alleviate allergy symptoms for some patients. After several months of treatment, Neil visited a friend’s house and sat outside with their dogs. As the cold crept in, he thought, “What if this medication has truly changed things and I could actually go inside?” To his utter disbelief, he spent three wonderful hours on the floor with the dogs — allergy-free! This remarkable experience prompted us to discuss his long-held wish for a dog with his consultant, leading us to the exciting decision to seek one out.
Just days later, we reached out to a breeder in Essex who already has several dogs in Jersey, and he had a couple of male puppies available from their latest litter of Cavapoos. When Neil and I saw the puppies via video link (we were still dealing with covid then), it was instantaneous love, and the story took a delightful turn.
On April 14th, 2021, Barley was born, and by June, he was joyfully part of our family after a few virtual interviews. Barley quickly became a beloved fixture at our shop. It wasn’t long before he was fully toilet-trained, and he joined us at work every day! The joy he has brought into our home is immeasurable — no more excuses to avoid the in-laws! He has also brought so much positivity to our team with his playful and friendly nature. He loves greeting customers and has even helped out at the checkout!
Although he still raises a bark at the man who delivers our water canisters, he has captured everyone’s hearts. Thanks to Barley, our shop has embraced a new community vibe. What started as a longing for a pet has blossomed into a wonderfully shared experience, enriching all our lives. We are beyond grateful for this unexpected yet delightful journey with Barley!
